Bangin

Oh my gosh I just made this and am literally rolling on the floor because it was seriously the best thing I have ever tasted. The mashed potatoes rocked my world. The homemade gravy was just insane. AND THE FREAKING MEAT. HOLY MOTHER ALMIGHTY. Sam even said it was really good. That’s saying something. Do yourself a favor and make this ASAP. You will be so thrilled.

I can’t believe Sunday night is already upon us. I just put Harry to bed after we read 2 books and am now sitting on the couch eating chocolate chip muffins. I get so sad on Sunday’s because it means the weekend and family time is over.

I wish I had his lashes

This weekend my mom and I drove to my sister’s in Duluth to wedding plan/dress shop as she is newly engaged (YAY!!!!!). I love going to Duluth-it’s such a fun place to visit and I love spending time with my mom and sister.

One of my obsessions is the Lake Superior Bakehouse. I make a point to stop there every time I’m in Duluth now because they have the most INSANE pastries and lattes. They open at 8 AM on Saturdays and I make sure I get there right at 8 so I have the first pick of all the treats. This time, after staring at the case of sugary snacks I selected a white chocolate raspberry scone, a caramel pecan roll, and my fave of the bunch, the blueberry cream cheese roll. UGH. I would love to eat these every day. They also satisfied my sweet tooth for the day. For my beverage I chose the smore’s mocha as it was the seasonal special. LOVE.

Seeing these pictures seriously makes my mouth water. I mean look at the frosting on that roll. GOOD lord. Help me.

Our weekend was spent at the wedding show, dress shopping (She said YES!), and playing games. Oh, we also watched the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and I’m obsessed. Oh and Pillow Talk. So good.  My mom and I left this morning after breakfast so I could get home to the fam bam jam. Also, traveling always throws off my bowel movements so I can’t wait to wake up, drink coffee, and poo.

I also got in a nice workout this afternoon. I finally got my push jerk in the 100’s and almost pee’d myself from excitement. I got 3 sets of 3 at 105 and couldn’t have been more joyous. Hard work pays off peeps. My workout was fast but fun. Here ya go:

For time:

27-21-15 reps of:

Burpees, Swings, Snatches (alternating arms), and Air Squats

Then…5-5-5-3-3-3 Push Jerk

5×12 lunges with barbell on back.

OOFDAH.

2019-01-13 03.16.44 1.jpg

Hey.

PS I got bangs. Yeah. Now I really feel like a mom 🙂

That is all for now as I have to get my shit ready for tomorrow. Fresh week. Big stuff ahead. Get focused, carry on.

Have a sweet Sunday night and eat dessert (get it?).

XO

Thoughts on a Friday

I had my alarm set for 4:30 am to go to the gym. Hare Bear decided to wake up at 4:29. I guess working out will have to wait…that’s OK though, I’d rather spend my morning snuggling the little guy. Pretty sure he’s teething and growing. The sweet thang is almost 4 months old. OMG. I can’t believe it. He is so excited to start solid foods (he told me he’s especially excited for avocado, banana, and sweet potatoes). He’s def discovered his hands and will shove them in his mouth any chance he gets.

2019-01-08 07.40.44 2.jpg

My sweet monkey boy ❤

He’s discovered how to make one shitty diaper (hehe). He “talks” to me and tells me secrets and it melts my heart. He also loves bouncing in the crib. Love you buddy. Here’s some pics from when he was just a wee one…those aren’t tears, my eyes are just sweating.

Confession…I still wear my postpartum undies. TMI. But seriously, they go over my belly and I have this weird obsession with pulling my pants over my belly. Even if you’re not pregnant or postpartum, I’d highly recommend them if you want to be extra comfy.

Moving on…Instant pots are taking over and I am 100% on that train. I haven’t made one thing yet that hasn’t melted my taste buds. My mom gave me a rack of ribs a while back and I had no clue what to do with them. I stumbled upon a rib rack recipe (say that 3 x fast…cmon, try it) and INSTANTly had to try it. Seriously, it took 20 minutes to cook an entire rack of ribs.

2019-01-09 07.05.33 1.jpg

Helllooo

Basically you brush the ribs with a mix of vinegar and water then sprinkle with the spice mixture (who knew I liked smoked paprika so much) and cut into individual ribs. Then you put that in the pot with the remaining vinegar water mix and cook on high pressure for 20 minutes. BOOM.

I’m a child and served mine with a side of boxed mac-n-cheese and pears. And I loved every bite.

2019-01-09 07.05.31 1.jpg

I also started writing things in my new planner I talked about last post. I love it so much. It has these cool goal setting areas and every week your supposed to pick the top 3 things you want to focus on. Super motivating and it makes me take time to think about what is really important in my jam packed days.

2019-01-09 07.05.36 1.jpg

Highly recommend this planner!

My workouts have felt meh lately as I came down with a little bug and just felt drained. I haven’t been running much because it just doesn’t sound fun right now. It’s also been icy AF and I don’t want to break my ankles. I can’t imagine carrying Harry around on crutches. I do plan on doing this later today:

12 minute AMRAP

15-12-9-6-3 THRUSTERS/PULLUPS

Then…EMOM 10 minutes: 3 squats remainder of minute AMRAP of squat jumps

Rest 1 minute

Then…Treadmill sprints (maybe).

Okay, that is all. Time to get ready for work. PS Dunn Bros has a lavender latte and I’m obsessed. OKAY Love ya, bye!

Protein Packed Saturday

I had a decaf caramel macchiato from Starbucks today and I swear it just puts me in the best mood. Harry and I (we tried to get Ruthie to come but she said she’s on a no caff diet right now) went at 5:30 this morning because the child wakes up at 5 everyday. It was so fun.

2018-11-17 06.34.33 2.jpg

Decaf duh

So, yesterday afternoon I went to a class at Alchemy (haven’t been for a while) and it was a blast. I went to the A10 since I’m just getting back into it and it kicked my bum. The workout had pull ups and I haven’t attempted a pull up since about March. Oofdah. But I gave it a shot and it wasn’t all that terrible. Except today. I def feel it today. I forgot how much I love working out in a class setting!

Today has been a busy day. After coffee, I came home and prepped my fave protein pancake recipe.

2018-11-17 06.34.31 2.jpg

Protein Pancake essentials

It’s really simple and so yummy. You take a cup of egg whites (I always add one whole egg), 1/3 cup of oats, a dash of baking powder and whatever spices you want. Sometimes I add tumeric. Today I went with cinnamon. You can also add protein powder, cocoa powder…the options are endless. Then you pour all that into a hot pan oiled with coconut oil and cook. I suck at flipping the thing because it’s giant so it always turns into a giant blob. But eating blobs is the most fun.

2018-11-17 06.34.29 2.jpg

YUM

The topping options are endless as well. Today I went with a little PB, some jam, a few dark chocolate chips, and some local honey. I might have licked my plate after. Only Harry and Ruth were here to judge me so that’s whatever. Oh, and whipped cream. Ruthie recently discovered her love for whipped cream as well and I always have to give her a little taste.

2018-11-17 06.42.06 2.jpg

Masterpiece

After downing my cake, I wanted to take Ruth for a run. But she was protesting the cold so I went by myself. I don’t know how far I went and I sure as heck didn’t go fast. I just took my time and enjoyed the snowflakes falling on me.

Next on the agenda, muffins! I found a box of Kodiak cakes muffin mix at Target yesterday and decided to try that with my fave easy muffin recipe. All you need is a box of cake mix, a can of pumpkin, and mini chocolate chips. Seriously, so simple.

2018-11-17 09.28.11 1.jpg

Choco-punkin

All you do is mix the cake mix with pumpkin and about 1/2 cup of water…add your chocolate chips and bake at 350-375 for 12 ish minutes.

2018-11-17 09.28.09 1.jpg

I love these muffins because they are so moist. I usually underbake them a tad so they are gooey in the middle. I offered Sam one but he politely declined. The options with these are also endless. Sometime I do a spice cake mix and rasins, or a white cake mix and white chocolate chips. YUM!

2018-11-17 09.59.19 1.jpg

True Beauty

I eat these for breakfast and dessert 🙂

The rest of our Saturday was spent lamp shopping (fail), eating, going for a walk, drinking Coconut La Croix, snuggling, and eating Chipotle.

PS there’s a new Hallmark movie on tonight and we can’t wait to snuggle in with our muffins and a cup of decaf mocha.

Have yourself a merry night!

XO

Harry Takes on Duluth

Good morning pals. Harry is currently having a day. He’s been awake since 5 AM and seems to only settle down when I hold him. I can tell he is super tired but he won’t fall asleep. Come on buddy, get your rest!

I’m also still  not confident in my breast feeding skills and have been pumping and feeding him the bottle…at least he’s still getting breastmilk right? I just love him so much and want to make sure he’s getting enough nutrition.

I can’t believe how fast the days goes with a baby. I don’t do a whole lot but I feel like every time I look at a clock another hour has gone by.

Over the weekend we took a road trip to Duluth, MN to visit Aunt Molly. We left Friday morning and arrived to beautiful snowfall. You know, the big fluffy flakes that make you feel like you’re in a snowglobe? The flakes that make you want to listen to Christmas Music, decorate, and bake cookies? Yeah, those flakes.

Once we unloaded the car (I feel like I need a moving van for all our stuff now) and fed the bear, my sister and I took a little trip to the craft store to find a Holiday project we could make. Here is a glimpse of the project we decided on.

2018-11-10 04.14.32 1.jpg

Turkey’s, Presents, and Trees…Oh my!

Dinner that night was at the Tavern on the Hill where I indulged in a lovely glass of wine and creepily stared at my baby. For dinner I went with the pork burrito bowl and we shared the fried pretzel sticks OMGSOGOOD.

Of course, we all had a craving for something sweet so we stopped at the grocery store for a Pumpkin Pie. Yum. My first pie of the fall.

Saturday morning arrived after about 4 hours of sleep and I decided I’d make a run to the Lake Superior Bakehouse. This might be my new favorite place in Duluth. They had a huge case of baked goods and I was only to pick 3…my what a feat. I went with a pecan caramel roll, scone, and cream cheese frosted cherry coffee cake. BEST CHOICES. I also got the best vanilla latte I’ve ever tasted. I kicked myself though for not thoroughly reading the menu and missing out on the lavender latte (they are my absolute fave). I was almost tempted to get a second latte but didn’t. I should have. Oh well. Next time.

2018-11-10 04.14.36 1.jpg

Effffff

Saturday was very relaxing as it was cold AF. Molly and I did a little putzing downtown and went to the Duluth Coffee Company where I got the best decaf mocha and she got the cutest little cappuccino drink. I just want all the warm beverages right now obviously.

2018-11-10 04.14.35 1.jpg

Yum ❤

Saturday finished with a little baking and The Greatest Showman. I’m so mad because I fell asleep about 10 minutes in. I wanted to see that movie so bad.

Sunday came too fast and we arose to more beautiful snow. After a fantastic breakfast at the Vanilla bean (GET the wild rice porridge)  it was on the road and back to the cities.

2018-11-11 02.05.17 1.jpg

Going to try to re-create this!

Every time I visit Duluth I always want to move there. It’s so fun and beautiful, outdoorsy, and relaxing. One of the best places to visit.

I always enjoy getting home after a weekend away though and catching up on laundry, working out, getting back on track with eating and meal prepping. After unpacking all our shit yesterday, I took a trip to the gym for a speedy workout (I haven’t been going during the week on account of I have a baby so it’s nice to go on weekends when Sam is around). Here’s a snap shot of what I did:

15 minute alternating EMOM (Every Minute on the Minute):

Minute 1: 13 Squat cleans

Minute 2: 15 Squat throws

* Every 5th Minute-complete 60 seconds of Slamball Step Ups*

Then…4 sets of 5 reps Sumo Deadlift High Pull

Superset with 4 sets of 10 reps American Swings (heavish)

Then…5 sets of 400 meter sprints on the treadmill

Cool Down with walking and stretching

I loved this workout and am def a little sore today. Give it a try!

Now, I’m hoping to make some gingerbread donuts today if my cranky baby allows.

Have a swell Monday and fantastic week. It’s almost Turkey Day, the best time of year.

XO

Happy Halloween!

HELLO!

I think I got like 7 hours of sleep last night and feel like a gem. After feeding Harry the Zombie this AM I did a nice 20 minute workout then made one of my fave breakfasts.

Here’s a snap of my workout in case you’re looking for a fun at home option:

EMOM (Every Min on the Min) for 8 minutes: 8-10 Burpees (leave at least 20 sec of rest)

Then…Alternating EMOM for 12 minutes (hit each movement 4 times):

10 Alternating Snatches

15 situps (did these very slow)

20 Deadlifts

Cool down with stretching and coffee. You’re welcome.

Now, back to breakfast. You see, lately I feel like my sugar intake has sky-rocketed. I mean I’m not mad about it but I had been having sweet breakfasts (french toast, oatmeal with brown sugar) daily and then lots of snacks. I figured it was time for something savory. I popped 2 slices of bread in the toaster, made 2 fried eggs, and compiled some avocado toast with ham and a little bit of cheese because I love cheese (Ruthie always knows when I open the cheese up and politely asks for some…I can’t resist her). YUM. Hoping this keeps me full til at least 11 am 🙂

2018-10-31 07.50.35 1.jpg

Smashed Avocados

Also, I just finished my coffee so I’m guessing I’ll have to #2 v soon. HEHE.

Yesterday morning I had to cook for the first time since bringing Hare Bear home. Yes, I haven’t made a meal (besides cooking some spaghetti noodles) for 5 weeks. Sam and I have the best family/friends and people have been bringing us meals.

I clearly wanted something easy so I searched Pinterest for a crock pot chicken recipe and came across this!

Yes, it looks like barf in the crock but was so easy and cheap! My two faves when it comes to cooking. I probably spent $15 total on all the ingredients and it tastes amazing.

I served it up with a big ole salad because veggies and some mini Pillsbury croissants because they are so buttery and delicious and a girl needs a buttery treat once in a while. Highly recommend this dish if you’re trying to decide what to make this weekend. I could drink the liquid right out of the bowl (and might have).

So, it’s Halloween. I’m not the biggest Halloween fan (except I love the candy and pumpkins) and don’t usually dress up now that I’m almost 30. I did buy Harry the cutest Harry potter outfit but it’s gigantic on him so he will just wear his pumpkin onesie and pumpkin hat. Sam and I will hand out candy tonight and I’m hoping to watch some sort of Halloween movie (or maybe just Hallmark XMAS because we only get like 2 months to enjoy).

2018-10-31 07.50.42 1.jpg

My lil punkin

So, Happy Halloween friends. I hope you get lots of treats and few tricks!

The rest of this week is kind of busy. I’m getting my hairs did tomorrow and can’t wait. I think getting my hair colored is one of my fave things. Yay. Harry and I have a bunch of errands to run and then Ruthie and I will probably go for some walks/runs. So fun.

Have a great mid-week day and we shall catch up soon.

XO

PS My pits are so sweaty. Help.

Progress Over Perfection

Good Morning. As I was about to fall asleep at 4 AM after Harry took a trip to the dairy queen last night (credit goes to my cousin Amber for calling it this LOL) I was thinking to myself how lucky Sam and I are to have a baby that eats and then falls right asleep at night. KISS OF DEATH. Of course, instantly I heard Harry making noise. Lets just say I’ve pretty much been up since 2:45 am…God Bless Coffee.

Good thing about being up in the wee hours of the morning? Silence, time to browse all the home goods stores online, time to plan the upcoming week, and time to think.

Sam and I are trying hard to decorate our house (we’ve lived here almost 4 years and nothing we own matches). I have zero design style. Sam redid our basement bathroom last fall/winter and I love it. It’s dark gray, has a heated floor, and is real cozy to me. But it still needs to be decorated. Think art, a mirror, and succulents. Friday, I went to Target to buy a storage organizer for towels and other bathroom necessities. I grabbed what I thought was a black cube organizer.

Once home and assembled, I realized it was dark brown. You’ve got to be kidding me. Sam pointed out right on the box it stated “espresso”. How was I supposed to know espresso meant brown? My design style SUCKS. I need serious help. I just want my house to look like Chip and Joanna Gaines decorated it. So, I’ve started searching Pinterest for ideas and we will see what we come up with…stay tuned for updates!

Anyway, my main point of this post is to talk about getting back in shape post baby and making progress over being perfect. I’ve been thinking a lot about how I love working out but how I also need to ease back into it after giving birth. It’s been almost 5 weeks since Harry arrived and I’m in that antsy mode to hit it hard. I’m trying to find the balance between being active and taking it one day at a time (word to your mother, don’t scroll the search page on Instagram if you don’t want to feel like a slug/compare yourself to the IG fitness models…sheesh).

You see, I love being active. I enjoy running, lifting weights, cardio, hiking, biking…everything. But having a child to watch, time is very limited for squeezing in sweat sessions. I either have to go at like 3 AM after a feeding (Hell to the no), go when Sam gets home from work (also hard because I’m usually V tired by then), do an at-home workout (OK option but I like the gym because it has barbells), or just tell myself I’ll try again tomorrow. This has happened multiple days and I’m actually A-OK with it.

So far I’ve found a pretty good balance. Harry, Ruthie, and I usually get in a nice walk every day. I do bicep curls with Harry (he’s a great 9 pound weight), and I’ve made it to the gym twice. I’ve also gone on some lovely little runs with Ruthie, and done a bundle of at-home workouts while Harry sleeps. I really feel like I gave myself enough time to recover from child birth and am super excited for a fresh start.

I’ve also learned that now I must make my workouts super efficient. I like adding little sprint sessions into my lifting sessions due to time constraints. Friday night I did a fun little workout at Anytime that looked like this:

5 rounds AFAP (as fast as possible):

6 Squat cleans

12 Box Jumps (I’m still doing step ups)

200 m sprint

Then: 5 sets

2 Thrusters + 2 Back Squats

It was a blast, I felt like I got a good sweat in about 30 minutes, and it was progress. Each day is a win in my books. Each day is a step in the right direction.

As for nutrition…I try to eat well but I feel like I’ve been eating way more desserts since Harry came along. I mean, I ate an entire 9×13 pan of pumpkin cake by myself in a week. I ate 8 chocolate chip cookies in 3 days. I’ve had a heaping bowl of cookies and cream ice cream the past 2 nights topped with Halloween candy. Not to mention the oatmeal monster cookie bars my mom made…I think I’ve had about 10 of those since Thursday. And the bowls of cereal at 2 AM. Holy monkies that’s a lot of treats. These snacks are just so easy to grab when I’m feeding Harry and suddenly find myself ravenous. Plus, I feel like all veggies make me and Harry gassy. So what else am I supposed to do!? 🙂 I’ll try to reel in the sugar this week…try.

I was looking through my pictures this morning (duh, I’ve been up for hours) and came across some photos from pre-pregnancy:

during pregnancy:

and post-pregnancy:

And you know what…I’m not mad about how things have changed. I still don’t get where all the skin goes from my big bump. Or if that line down my belly will ever go away. But it’s kind of neat. Also a reminder of how insane our bodies are and how they can bring new life into this world.

So here’s to setting goals for this week to eat a few more veggies (and still enjoy a cookie or 5), getting to the gym 2 times, taking each day at a time/focusing on progress over being perfect, and enjoying all the snuggles with Harry and Ruthie.

Have a lovely day and Go Pack!

PS please excuse my rambling post today…I’m hopped up on caffiene.

XO

Sunday’s are for Chores and Shopping

Good morning! I’ve been up since 5:30 am feeding a hungry baby and now I’m wide awake and ready for a Sunday funday!

I’m also very excited because I just ordered these shoes and can’t wait to try them on. I don’t know about you but I’m very into online shopping…except when you have to make returns. I hate that.

Yesterday was a busy day in the wakefield household. You see, having a new baby means lots of laundry because lots of poop and pee and spit up. So, it was a very convenient time for our washer to break…NOT. Sam thinks it’s my fault because I shoved a huge comforter and pillow in there but I think it’s time was just up. So we took Harry to Home Depot yesterday and let him pick out the new washer. He did a good job and didn’t even pick the most expensive one…win! He also picked a dryer so we got that too…you know you’re grown up when you get excited about a new appliance.

Yesterday morning I also attended my first Alchemy class in what feels like a year (I think it’s been like 3 months?). It was hard and I realized my core is SO weak after having Harry (Had to do planks from my knees!). I took it easy, used lighter weights, and modified movements I wasn’t comfortable with. It was really nice to get in a group setting and get in a good sweat. But holy cow am I sore today…a good sore though.

This morning it is freaking freezing out so I decided to skip my Costco Pumpkin muffin and make a large bowl of oatmeal instead. I was feeling nice and spicy so I zipped that bowl up with some lovely flavors. It looked a little something like this:

1/2 cup of oats

Large sprinkle of tumeric

Large sprinkle of cinnamon (Vietnamese from Penzy’s…only cinnamon you should ever buy)

*I never measure my spices, I just dump them in*

Handful of crasins

I topped this with some homemade pumpkin butter and local real honey. YUM. I always forget how much I love oats until I eat them. Nice and warm, perfect for a chilly fall day.

Speaking of chili, I love chili so much but am trying not to eat it on account of beans and breastfeeding. So today I’m hoping to prep my other fave fall soup from PaleOMG. This soup is so easy to make and I buy the already chopped butternut squash. HIGHLY recommend. I’m also planning on making something in the slow cooker because I haven’t used that once this fall, some chocolate chip cookies, and overnight golden milk oats because now I’m on the oat train. Oh, and maybe some fun fetti donuts!

Sunday’s are normally for Football but not today. Since our washer isn’t going to arrive until Nov 6th, I’m using my parents washer to do laundry a couple times a week (I feel like a college student). So today we will be making the trek to Hudson for laundry, some Harry introductions to friends, and *hopefully* a nice walk at the State Park. Yahoo! Sounds like a fun filled Sunday if you ask me!

Now I gotta go #2 because I had coffee and oats and that’s a deadly combo…TMI but who cares I’m sure you’re about to poo too (pretty sure Harry’s pooping right now too).

Have a lovely Sunday my friends. Thanks for reading, I appreciate you all.

XO

-Hales (and a big #2)

Harry is 3 weeks!

HAHA funny thing…when I typed that title I accidentally typed months instead of weeks. No, Harry is not 3 months yet…thank goodness.

We had a busy but lovely weekend with family and friends. Friday started with a coffee date with some girlfriends at Fairgrounds. Such a cute place, Harry wants to go back weekly (even though he didn’t see the place due to his eyes being closed the whole time). I got the best mocha complete with a large chunk of chocolate. Highly recommend.

2018-10-14 10.31.53 1.jpg

Sleepy Harry

This was the first weekend Sam was able to be home the whole weekend so it was very relaxing (he normally has to do some window washing on the weekends for his business) and we had lots of snuggle time with Ruth and Harry on the couch due to the freezing cold and snow…yes, snow.

Aunt Molly came to town Friday for some full blown Harry snuggles and it was great to have her. I wish she could live in my basement and be my full time nanny but lets be real, that isn’t gonna happen.

The whole crew went to our fave local restaurant Moe’s on Friday for dinner. It just happened to be Oktoberfest there so that was a fun time…we did leave before the Polka band started because Harry did not have proper ear attire. But, we did get in on the Oktoberfest specials…hello pretzel with mustard and beer cheese. One of my faves.

2018-10-14 10.31.51 1.jpg

First beer cheese dip in MONTHS…holla.

One thing about having a baby and having to feed him every couple hours is that by the time 8pm rolls around and baby gets his milk, mama is so tired. So I did not make it very long Friday night 😦

Saturday morning we woke up and made a snazzy breakfast of pumpkin blueberry pancakes (my fave recipe from my mom), eggs and veggies, maple sausages, and coffee. The pancakes turned out so good and I am still eating them today.

2018-10-14 10.31.49 1.jpg

Punkin Pancakes

Molly and I took Harry and Ruth to the park for a nice walk after breakfast but Harry was a little crabby so we didn’t make it very far before turning around…of course right when we got back to the car he fell asleep. Convenient.

The rest of Saturday was spent at my parents house watching the Brewers and eating the best hamburgers my dad cooked on the grill. Dinner was followed by the best desserts every from San Pedro Cafe in Hudson. If you’re in the area, stop in for the Habenero Chocolate cake and Key Lime Pie. They are my fave but I only get them on my Birthday. YUM.

Aunt Molly also did a nice little newborn photo shoot of Harry this weekend and I am so in love with the photos. Of course he slept through most of the pictures but managed to open those dark eyes up for about 5 pictures. Little buddy.

2018-10-14 10.31.49 2.jpg

Little Lamb

My mom got us this cool first year picture frame and I can’t wait to start filling it up.

So today, I have an appointment with a lactation specialist because our Pediatrician was a little concerned about Harry not being back at his birth weight at our 2 week check up on Friday. She also didn’t like that he wasn’t waking himself up to feed every couple hours (I was having to wake him). I have been breastfeeding him for 10 minutes on each side every 2.5-3 hours and then pumping and feeding him whatever I pump (about 2 oz). Let me tell you, it’s exhausting, my nips are sore, and it feels like all I do is feed this child but I will do whatever it takes to make this work.

I’m really hoping things are going in the right direction because last night he woke himself up 3 times to eat. That’s gotta be a good sign. Hoping he’s at least 8 lbs 1 oz today at his weigh in and we can figure out what’s going on with our feeding sitch. Hoping for the best! He also shits and pees a lot so he’s gotta be getting nourishment. Cmon little buddy, grow!

He has grown an inch already and is in the 94th percentile for his height but his weight is in the 20th percentile.

The rest of today will be filled with a little cleaning, some organizing, a special visit from cousin Amber and little William, and a possible trip to Costco…although I’m really not sure how to bring Harry into Costco. Usually I use the stroller in stores because I’m not confident in putting him in a shopping cart (in his car seat) but I need a 40 lb bag of dog food and that def won’t fit in the stroller….hmm. Any thoughts?

I’m also going to admit I was getting restless and did a tiny 10 minute workout today. It felt so good to move around. I took it easy, drank lots of water and took breaks when needed. It looked a little something like this:

10 min AMRAP

30-20-10 reps

Air Squats

Snatches

Straight Leg Deadlifts

Bent Over Row

*Used 25 pound weight*

Ended with 3 10 second intervals of plank holds (slow and steady wins the race).

I wish you a productive week full of all things you love. Happy half way through October (SLOW down time!).

Thursday Things

Man, it’s been a busy week. I thought time would slow down being on maternity leave but nope! It just seems to go faster!

Harry turned 2 weeks old on Monday and I feel like he’s letting me get a little more sleep each night. Thank you buddy, I appreciate that. I still am feeling a little stressed about the whole breastfeeding thing and might visit the baby cafe either this afternoon or next week. I just want to make sure he’s getting enough nourishment! He has his 2 week check up tomorrow so I’m excited to see if he’s growing/where his weight is.

So, lets chat fun things. The weather here is shit. It’s been raining for the past 5 days and now today the high is a measly 39 degrees. I NEED SOME SUN. So, to battle the gloomy blues, I’ve been super into baking. Last week I made pumpkin donuts, this week it was apple donuts. I just searched online for a recipe but I want to start experimenting and making my own recipes!

The apple donuts were baked and then dusted with cinnamon and sugar and seemed a little dense but I still think they tasted amazing. Served with a side of scramble eggs and avocado…yum! I ate 10 of them in 3 days…LOL. Oops.

Apple do-nuts or don’t-nuts

I also tried my hand at a pumpkin spice latte because we all know the ones from Starbucks and Caribou have like a million grams of sugar. If I’m gonna eat a million grams of sugar I’d rather have a couple donuts (or 10) ya know. So I took some milk and pumpkin and cooked that in a pan for about 5 minutes. Then I removed that from the heat and added a little maple syrup (thanks Uncle Danny), vanilla, pumpkin pie spice, and brewed coffee. I’d say it’s pretty fantastic. And I feel a lot better drinking this knowing there’s not a ton of unnatural crap in it.

Baby Spice? Nah, Pumpkin Spice

Now, today is my 29th Birthday. It’s crazy how as you get older (and have kids and dogs) birthday’s get a tiny bit less exciting. I mean obviously it’s fun to know 29 years ago my mom was going through what I went through 2 weeks ago (sorry mom-I now know the pain you went through!). But as I age, I just care less about getting presents and more about spending quality time with the people that mean the most in my life. I’d much rather get coffee and chat than anything in the world. I’d much rather take my dog to the state park for a hike on a fall day. I’d rather receive a hug from my mom and dad than a cake. You get it.

Of course a Birthday brings about a whole new year. 365 days to grow, change, adventure, set goals, accomplish goals. If you think about it, 365 days seems like a long time but it’s really not. It sure flies by. So here’s a list of things I’m hoping to see/do in my 29th year.

-Teach my son to be a caring, loving human

– Travel to Banff/Lake Louise

-Try one new thing each month (new recipe, workout class, book)

-Sign up for a new race (hello Lutsen 50K??)

-Donate to puppy shelter

-Send more cards

-Adventure with Sam

-Make wine! Go on a wine tour

-Re-decorate/paint my house/fix it up/plan and save for new house (more like 5 year plan hehe)

-Blog consistently because writing is my true passion

-Relax. Stop being so hard on self.

-More homemade recipes…stop spending $5 on coffee!!!!! SAVE $$$

-Clean out closet-get rid of anything haven’t worn in past year

-Learn to live in the moment and stop wishing for next week/month/year

It’s just a start but having these things written down helps me see what I hope to accomplish and stay on track.

Do you have any goals you want to accomplish in the next year? How do you stay on track? I would love to hear your tips/tricks!

Now it’s time to catch up on laundry, dishes, and This Is Us (I’m only on season 2!).

Have a fabulous fall day.

XO

Recovery

Good morning. I sit here sipping a tumeric mocha hot chocolate (leftover from yesterday morning…so freaking good), thinking about all sorts of things. I’m a big list maker and every day I write down a list of things I want to accomplish in my planner. Most days the items are things like meal prep, workout, laundry, run, and so on. Lately, my lists have consisted of baths, baby feedings, cleaning, laundry, walks, and naps. My how things have changed.

Christmas Mug!

As soon as you bring a child into the world, everything changes (for the best). Yes, I still do things for myself but now my baby comes first. Yesterday, Harry had a day. He was gassy, fussy, and nothing seemed to calm him except a ride to grandma and grandpas house. I tried singing to him, snuggling him, feeding him, changing him…he just couldn’t get happy. Normally I’d be a mess. I’d cry, freak out, become extremely stressed….but I’m learning I need to remain calm. Everything will work itself out. He’s a baby and he’s going to have good days and bad and I will take each day as it comes 🙂 He’s just so cute I don’t like seeing him with a sad face.

Tummy time! He’s already starting to hold his head up for a couple seconds!

So, now that the baby’s here, I’ve been thinking about my recovery plan. How soon can I get back into working out, eating protein shakes, running…all the things I love to do. I’ve been reading and most things say wait 6 weeks. At first my thoughts were…”6 weeks!? I can’t wait 6 weeks! I will lose all my endurance and muscles and never be able to pick up a weight again.” HAHA Haley, stop. You just pushed a baby out of yourself. Give yourself a break (a constant daily reminder).

You see, I thought I’d have the baby and be back to working out like normal in a week or two. LOL. Little did I know my body would need time to recover and rest. I tried doing pushups and could hardly eek out 2 from my knees. It also didn’t feel extremely great on my stomach/uterus. So I stopped. At that moment, I vowed to give myself the full 6 weeks to let my body heal. Yes, it’s freaking hard especially because I’m used to going going going all day. It’s hard for me to sit still. But I’m trying. Family walks have been a lifesaver. Lifting the baby has been a good arm workout. I will be alright, I just need to keep telling myself to take it easy and enjoy this time right now.

Like I said above, I’m a big list maker. So I already started making lists of things I do want to do once I’m back on the physical fitness train…it looks a little something like this:

  1. EASE back into it. Start with 10 minute workouts and work up to 20 minutes.
  2. Start with 2-3 days of working out and work up to 5 days.
  3. 2 full rest days a week (soak in the tub, take a walk).
  4. Start with all body weight and slowly add weight when ready.
  5. Focus on strengthening the core muscles.
  6. Running-start with 1 min of running, 1 min of walking and work up to 5 min running (get some solid new kicks for motivation).
  7. Sign up for a spring trail run for motivation (Hello willow river trail run!).
  8. Try a new class (Barre, yoga, flyfeet, orange theory…)
  9. EAT more veggies 🙂
  10. Give myself a break. No negative thoughts.

I’m hoping to get a weight bench at home so I can do this stuff while Harry snoozes but every one I’ve looked at is SO expensive and I’m trying to save money for Harry’s college fund so any recommendations on gym equipment would be gladly accepted.

Now for nutrition, I’m really trying my best to eat nutritious foods that will make Harry nice and strong. Although my sweet tooth has def showed back up since giving birth. AND all I want is milk…chocolate milk, white milk…all milk! So weird because I wasn’t a huge milk drinker before. Maybe it’s because I’m expressing so much milk to my son that my supply is depleted? LOL.

So meals have looked like this:

Breakfast: 2 eggs with spinach and tumeric + 2 homemade pumpkin donuts + a small coffee or tumeric mocha

Snack: Fruit (apple or banana)

Lunch: Salad or soup (thanks to everyone who has brought us meals!)+ roll or bread + handfull of M&M’s-I haven’t had plain M&M’s for ages and they are seriously the best thing right now.

Snack: Handful of potato chips or bowl of cereal

Dinner: Apple Beef meatballs with gravy, butternut squash, apple crisp, MILK.

Thanks mom!

As my 29th Birthday is less than a week away, I’m trying to reflect on how I can live my best life for me and those around me. Here’s to making goals/lists, being challenged, exciting adventures, new experiences, and YOLO-ing.

Have a fantastic football Sunday. Go Pack! Go Brew Crew.

XO
