Progress Over Perfection

Good Morning. As I was about to fall asleep at 4 AM after Harry took a trip to the dairy queen last night (credit goes to my cousin Amber for calling it this LOL) I was thinking to myself how lucky Sam and I are to have a baby that eats and then falls right asleep at night. KISS OF DEATH. Of course, instantly I heard Harry making noise. Lets just say I’ve pretty much been up since 2:45 am…God Bless Coffee.

Good thing about being up in the wee hours of the morning? Silence, time to browse all the home goods stores online, time to plan the upcoming week, and time to think.

Sam and I are trying hard to decorate our house (we’ve lived here almost 4 years and nothing we own matches). I have zero design style. Sam redid our basement bathroom last fall/winter and I love it. It’s dark gray, has a heated floor, and is real cozy to me. But it still needs to be decorated. Think art, a mirror, and succulents. Friday, I went to Target to buy a storage organizer for towels and other bathroom necessities. I grabbed what I thought was a black cube organizer.

Once home and assembled, I realized it was dark brown. You’ve got to be kidding me. Sam pointed out right on the box it stated “espresso”. How was I supposed to know espresso meant brown? My design style SUCKS. I need serious help. I just want my house to look like Chip and Joanna Gaines decorated it. So, I’ve started searching Pinterest for ideas and we will see what we come up with…stay tuned for updates!

Anyway, my main point of this post is to talk about getting back in shape post baby and making progress over being perfect. I’ve been thinking a lot about how I love working out but how I also need to ease back into it after giving birth. It’s been almost 5 weeks since Harry arrived and I’m in that antsy mode to hit it hard. I’m trying to find the balance between being active and taking it one day at a time (word to your mother, don’t scroll the search page on Instagram if you don’t want to feel like a slug/compare yourself to the IG fitness models…sheesh).

You see, I love being active. I enjoy running, lifting weights, cardio, hiking, biking…everything. But having a child to watch, time is very limited for squeezing in sweat sessions. I either have to go at like 3 AM after a feeding (Hell to the no), go when Sam gets home from work (also hard because I’m usually V tired by then), do an at-home workout (OK option but I like the gym because it has barbells), or just tell myself I’ll try again tomorrow. This has happened multiple days and I’m actually A-OK with it.

So far I’ve found a pretty good balance. Harry, Ruthie, and I usually get in a nice walk every day. I do bicep curls with Harry (he’s a great 9 pound weight), and I’ve made it to the gym twice. I’ve also gone on some lovely little runs with Ruthie, and done a bundle of at-home workouts while Harry sleeps. I really feel like I gave myself enough time to recover from child birth and am super excited for a fresh start.

I’ve also learned that now I must make my workouts super efficient. I like adding little sprint sessions into my lifting sessions due to time constraints. Friday night I did a fun little workout at Anytime that looked like this:

5 rounds AFAP (as fast as possible):

6 Squat cleans

12 Box Jumps (I’m still doing step ups)

200 m sprint

Then: 5 sets

2 Thrusters + 2 Back Squats

It was a blast, I felt like I got a good sweat in about 30 minutes, and it was progress. Each day is a win in my books. Each day is a step in the right direction.

As for nutrition…I try to eat well but I feel like I’ve been eating way more desserts since Harry came along. I mean, I ate an entire 9×13 pan of pumpkin cake by myself in a week. I ate 8 chocolate chip cookies in 3 days. I’ve had a heaping bowl of cookies and cream ice cream the past 2 nights topped with Halloween candy. Not to mention the oatmeal monster cookie bars my mom made…I think I’ve had about 10 of those since Thursday. And the bowls of cereal at 2 AM. Holy monkies that’s a lot of treats. These snacks are just so easy to grab when I’m feeding Harry and suddenly find myself ravenous. Plus, I feel like all veggies make me and Harry gassy. So what else am I supposed to do!? 🙂 I’ll try to reel in the sugar this week…try.

I was looking through my pictures this morning (duh, I’ve been up for hours) and came across some photos from pre-pregnancy:

during pregnancy:

and post-pregnancy:

And you know what…I’m not mad about how things have changed. I still don’t get where all the skin goes from my big bump. Or if that line down my belly will ever go away. But it’s kind of neat. Also a reminder of how insane our bodies are and how they can bring new life into this world.

So here’s to setting goals for this week to eat a few more veggies (and still enjoy a cookie or 5), getting to the gym 2 times, taking each day at a time/focusing on progress over being perfect, and enjoying all the snuggles with Harry and Ruthie.

Have a lovely day and Go Pack!

PS please excuse my rambling post today…I’m hopped up on caffiene.

Harrison Charles Wakefield

Oh hi! Heads up, this may be an extra long blog post…lots to share. Grab some coffee, take a seat, and join me in re-living the events that led up to lil Hdubs arrival.

Last weekend I felt so great. Got a prenatal massage on Saturday, cleaned the house, worked out…the whole shebang. Sunday morning I went to the Apple Orchard with my dad and we had a blast. It’s our annual tradition to go to the Maple Leaf Orchard then stop at Cady Cheese Factory in Wisconsin.

I was so pumped because I didn’t think I’d get to the orchard this year on account of the human cooking in my belly. So my dad and I took a convertable ride to the orchard, ate 2 apple donuts (the best MF donuts I’ve ever had), and picked a bushel of apples.

THE BEST DONUTS EVER.

2018-09-28 11.17.51 4.jpg

I love McIntosh apples so much.

After the apple picking, we headed to the cheese factory and snagged some 5 yr aged chedda, cheese curds, and chive onion colby (hello grilled cheese). A lovely fall day if you ask me.

After getting back to my house I felt so great and full of apples and did a nice little workout, walked the dog, and hung out with Sam and Ruth.

Fast forward to 8:30 PM as we we’re literally hopping into bed and turning off the light…a warm sensation oozed from down there. I instantly thought HOLY SHIT my water broke…but then I wasn’t so sure because it didn’t seem like that much…but then it kept gushing out as I stood in the bath tub. After getting some amazing advice from some girlfriends I called the on-call physician. He said my membrane had ruptured and it was time to pack up and head to the hospital…what!? I wasn’t due for another week. I was so convinced he’d be late.

It was now about 9PM Sunday night. Sam grabbed our stuff, packed us into the car and drove the 15 ish minutes to the Hospital. I still felt just fine…no contractions…I just kept saying “I’m leaking!”

The check-in at the Hospital was so smooth. Everyone was so nice and helpful. I felt so great I was laughing and having a good ole time. A nice nurse named Cindy led us to our room where I proceeded to put my hospital gown on backwards. Sam told me it was backwards and I assured him it wasn’t. The nurse came in and goes “Oh dear, your gown is backwards.” Off to a great start Hale.

Anyway, I was still feeling fine…fast forward to Monday morning. Contractions had finally started but were like 6-7 minutes apart. I tried my breathing techniues but still felt alright for the most part. I like the hospital because it was pretty much all you can eat/drink for your stay. I enjoyed many glasses of chocolate milk, apple juice, iced tea, and water.

Hydration Station

So, lets fast forward a little more…I don’t remember the times but probs late morning contractions started picking up. I told everyone I wanted to do this naturally because I wanted to feel the pain. Let me tell you…the pain was worse than I expected. I thought it would be just a tiny cramp feeling. Heck no. It was literally unbearable. The nurse kept urging us to walk around to get the labor started. But nothing was happening and the contractions were all over the place…enter Petocin. They gave me a dose of that an like instantly everything worsened. THE PAIN. It was awful. Everythime a contraction came I wanted to collapse. Sam was amazing the whole time and I could cry thinking about how supportive he was.

Anyway, about an hour after the Petocin, I couldn’t handle the pain. I caved and asked for the drugs. Best choice ever. I got a dose of Fentanal (no clue how to spell it), and that brought a bit of relief. I felt so weird…like I was floating and had a vision of neon puppies on a door mat. Yeah, weird. I told Sam and he laughed at me.

Next came the Epidural. Let me tell you, I am so thankful for whoever created the Epidural. About 10 minutes after they shot my back, I could not feel a damn thing. I had to ask the nurse if I was having contractions because I didn’t feel an ounce of pain.

Things stayed pretty chill for a while and I even got a rest. Then the nurse came in around 4 pm to check my cervix…we weren’t expecting much but she goes…”well, are you ready to have a baby?” Yes Amber, we are. Sam was shocked but glad he didn’t have time to prepare for the labor.

26 minutes of pushing  and out popped little Harry. I cried. I couldn’t believe he was here. They laid him on my chest and I just couldn’t have felt happier. Side note, pushing was not terrible except for the whole holding my breath for 10 seconds part…that was so hard!

Harrison Charles Wakefield joined us at 5:04 pm September 24th, 2018. He was a whopping 8 pounds, 1 ounce and 21 inches long. Can’t imagine giving birth a week later…he probs would have been like 9 pounds!

The fam got to leave the hospital Wednesday afternoon to a parade. It was the cutest thing ever. Let me tell you, the staff at St. John’s was great and I will def deliver there again if the chance arises 🙂

Baby Parade

Life with a baby is nothing like I expected. Breast feeding has been a challenge but each time gets a little better. Our goal is to fatten him up as he started losing weight pretty fast. He loves to sleep, eat, and hang out in his Mama Roo. It’s been a big adjustment for Ruthie but she’s doing great and is the best protector of Harry.

I am feeling pretty good (I did have to get stitched up a bit but it feels better every day. I’ve taken lots of salt baths and am trying to take it easy. PS post-partum leggins and undies are the best thing I ever purchased, witch hazel pads really cool the bottom, and giant pads are not glamorous. But, you kind of don’t care after pushing a human out.

Ruth, Harry, and I took a nice walk this afternoon and it was such a relief knowing she walks nicely next to the stroller. I also walk at the pace of a snail right now but whatever. It’s nice just to get some fresh air.

Proud Aunt Molly

I know it’s a huge adjustment bringing a baby into this world but I am so excited for all the new experiences and memories we are going to make as a family.

Thanks for your support through this whole process. I’ll try to keep updates as we go along but life might get a little busier.

Hope you are having the best fall ever…I could really go for a PSL or glass of wine 😉

The Babymoon

Another week has flown by, little dude is growing by the day, and I’m starting to slow down in almost every daily task. I still feel pretty darn good considering we have less than 10 weeks to go!

This last week I haven’t had much of an appetite but when I do, it’s a force. I’ve been craving pizza (hello Margharita from Punch Pizza), ice cream, and milk shakes. Also BBQ chips…weird because I’ve never loved that flavor.

Workouts this week have been pretty good. A good mix of full body stuff, weights, and some cardio…Although running is getting a little difficult… might give that a rest soon.

Now for the main topic of this post…Baby moon! Sam surprised me with a little getaway to a town called Bayfield, WI last week. We had the most lovely time and the weather was just perfect.

I kept a journal (per Sam’s request) and am thinking maybe one day I’ll publish a travel journal…LOL.

We left our house at 10AM Sunday morning and made a few pit stops along the way. It took us about 4 hours to get there but it was worth the drive. Bayfield is on Lake Superior and just plain gorgeous. Our motel was right on the water and the front desk lady was just the cutest.

We kept a pretty low key itinerary for the most part. We did a lot of walking around then sitting on patios with beverages (beer for Sam, H2O or lemonade for me).

We ate a ton of good food, especially our breakfast Monday morning. We hit up a little joint called The Fat Radish. I had the most amazing pumpkin chocolate chip pancakes and a lavender latte. OMG. I could eat that daily.

It was good to have all that fuel because right after breakfast we hopped on the Fairy to Madeline Island. The ride over was beautiful. We sat on the top deck and got some pretty amazing views of the lake.

Once we got on the island, we rented our selves some bicycles (Sam was voting for mopeds but I was not into that), and headed off on a 15 mile round trip to Big Bay State Park. We did a little Lakeshore hike there and scoped out the campground. I really wanted to rent kayaks but was too afraid I wouldn’t pass the safety test on account of my belly is the size of a basketball.

After the bike ride we stopped at The Beach Club for a snack and a drink. We then took a nice walk to the Marina and stopped at a little Pub where the waitress specially made me a fresh strawberry and soda water. She was a doll. Everyone on the Island was so friendly and I’ve never gotten so many congratulations on my belly.

The waitress told Sam he could take his margarita in a to-go cup because apparently you can walk around like Vegas on Madeline Island. So fun!

We hopped back on the Fairy around 3PM then hit up a rooftop for some more hydration.

Since it was our last night, we decided to do dinner then dessert. We had dinner at the MannyPenny Bistro (Great chicken fajitas), followed by an insane dessert at the Pier Plaza (I think this was the name). I went with the monster carrot cake because duh and because I’m feeding a growing boy. Sam chose the chocolate lava cake. We were both very satisfied with our choices and it was the perfect ending to a super fantastic Baby moon.

This week I’m hoping to paint the nursery and get up the cacti decals! Other than that, I’m just cooking. and cleaning, and hanging by the pool with my mom.

Have a lovely summer weekend!

Week 22

Do you ever find yourself browsing Pinterest then next thing you know it’s been an hour and you’re like “wtf did I just spend an hour of my day doing?” Yeah, that just happened. Also, do people even use Pinterest anymore? I know I do. It’s got everything you could ever imagine. I found tons of recipes to try this week, baby room ideas, homemade dog treat ideas…you get it.

Welp, here we are again…Friday. I swear my belly grew overnight. I now def have a defined bump and outtie belly button. Sssssssscute. 4 months from tomorrow Sam and I could possibly have a little baby in our arms…that’s INSANE! Time flies when you’re having fun pregnant. Also, I hate taking belly pics with a passion.

Bump!

This last week brought some of Baby Wakey’s firsts. He got to go swimming for the first time at my parent’s pool and play his first round of golf…really hoping he likes that sport. Sam will be thrilled if we have a little golfer. Also, the pool was glorious considering it was 95 degrees out. So refreshing. I know where I’m going to be all summer…right on that popsicle float.

Golfing with Grandma and Grandpa

I also felt the little bugger kick for the first time. I’m pretty positive it was a kick. Even if it wasn’t I’m still going to say it was. And I’ve felt it a few more times since…so it had to have been a kick. Regardless, it was cool and fascinating and exciting all at once.

Last week also brought about some new cravings…I felt like eating a hot dog daily (didn’t get one yet but that’s on my list for the meal prep). I’m talking ball park, all beef, all the toppings (even onions), hot dog. I’ve also been craving really good french fries, cheese curds, MILK (wtf), ice cream and popsicles, and potato salad. I’ve obviously had like none of these items (except milk and popsicles) at home so those are all I’ve caved to thus far. Oh and a cute sprinkle donut my dad bought me last weekend. BUT, like I said, I’m grocery shopping tomorrow…this could be interesting 🙂

USA

I’ve also been experiencing some leg cramping. I know it’s due to being pregnant but I’m also blaming the hot humid weather we’ve been having. I get these cramps in my hips/IT bands and my right calf. I woke up Wednesday night with the worst cramp I’ve ever had in my calf. YUCK. I think I’m drinking enough water but I’ve started adding bananas into my diet even though I H8 bananas. Sam says I need Gatorade but I don’t like that stuff unless I’m running a marathon. It gives me gut rot.

I haven’t had any odd dreams or bodily functions (I’ve been constipated this week though and that just made me uncomfortable and crabby…sorry mom and dad for being a little baby at dinner Thursday night). Also, I can’t get enough AC. My mom told me about how they didn’t have AC when she was pregnant with my older sister and it was like 100 degrees daily. She’s superwoman I tell ya. I would have thrown fits every day.

I’ve also been super unmotivated when it comes to working out. I did an at home workout Tuesday night, then went to the gym Wednesday and Thursday mornings but that’s been it for weights this week. I did go for a nice run this morning with my super fancy LED arm band. That was fun. Other than that I just really want to swim and hike. Oh, and golf. Golfing is so fun.

2018-06-01 02.32.24 1.jpg

I’m probably gonna go get a McFlurry now. Have a super fun rest of your weekend. Stay cool and drink a margarita or 5 for me.

If you Sprink when you Tink

Really thanking the high heavens we have air conditioning right now. I mean it’s schteamy out there. 90 and humid and all I want to do is dip my feet in a pool and eat mango fruit pops…that’s probably what I’ll be doing the majority of the weekend. Oh, yeah, happy weekend. Can’t believe it’s already the end of May…wtf mate.

Another week of being preggo has come and gone and I think my belly is growing every day. My appetite this week has gone insane and I feel like all I want to do is eat, eat, and eat. Cravings this week have included pizza, PB & J, ice cream, mac & cheese, a sprinkled long john donut, avocado toast with ham and a fried egg, always hamburgers, and pancakes/french toast. I’ve gained like 13 pounds so far this pregnancy so I’m indulging when I feel like it which means a cup of Neapolitan ice cream nightly. Soak it in sista because before long baby will be here and I’m sure I’ll be eating salads and vegetables….wait, who am I kidding.

Speaking of vegetables…last weekend I planted my very first garden. You see this spring I feel like I come home, hangout with my dog, eat dinner, and go to bed…hello Mrs. Boring! So I told Sam I needed a hobby. That hobby just happened to be gardening. My sister is pretty good at it so I frantically called her from the seed aisle in Menard’s and confessed to her “I didn’t know gardening could be this hard.” The man next to me looking at the pea plant seeds looked at me and chuckled with a sympathetic smile…”yeah, it’s pretty tough. Good luck.”

I’m up for the challenge. Sam put together a 4×4 raised bed for me and we filled it with planter soil and a bag of compost (tip from my sis).

2018-05-24 06.51.19 1.jpg

Lil buddies

I then drove to a few different stores to find my crops. For my pots I got cucumbers (hopefully they turn out so I can try canning pickles), cherry tomatoes, and green beans. I put these in pots because my sister said they need to be able to grow up on those metal vine like things. Sure sis, I’ll do whatever you say. For the garden box I planted sweet peppers, sweet potatoes (really hoping these work), buttercup squash (a secret surprise for Sam), tri-color carrots, and green onions.

2018-05-24 06.51.16 1.jpg

Final product

Now let me tell you a funny store about planting seeds in a garden. I didn’t really read the instructions on the packet before planting…I just assumed you dug up some soil, poured in the seeds, covered them, and called it good. I did just that with my squash then decided to take a speedy look at the back of the package…plant 2 seeds per 12 inches it said. I had just dumped about 12 seed in a 5 inch plot. Uh,whoops. Might be a little crowded in that section of the garden. Oh well, it was still fun to plant.

Besides the garden, last week was full of carpet cleaning and finally setting up the babe’s crib. I love it so much. Normally I’m a gray person but we decided on a lighter color “wood” look and it’s gorg.

2018-05-24 06.51.13 1.jpg

Can’t wait til there’s a little human in that bad boy. Funny story about setting up cribs…let the man do the work in peace. Sam was having some troubles so I got down on my hands and knees right in front of him and asked how it was going after hearing him say a few choice words…he did not appreciate that and asked me to vacate the room. Sure dude, I’ll go eat another mango Popsicle and watch you work from the couch 🙂

I also found this great diaper bag at Aldi for $16! Talk about a bargain. I’m hoping it lasts a while because I actually really like it. Like who knew diaper bags could be so freaking expensive! I’ve found some for over $100. I’m trying to save for diapers OK. I’m not a millionaire. Man, I should have gone into the baby supply making business.

2018-05-24 06.52.22 1.jpg

This week I’ve been feeling pretty lazy so runs/workouts have been meh. But that’s okay, I’m growing a human so like that’s a workout in itself. I have been doing some hikes at the state park with Ruth and that’s been pretty enjoyable.

2018-05-24 06.51.22 1.jpg

My fave girl and my fave place

Okay now lastly, let me tell you something that happened that shocked me but also made me LOL so hard. I was planting my garden and went inside to get some H2O because us pregnant ladies must stay hydrated. I didn’t think I had to pee so I headed down my stairs to the front door when suddenly I sneezed (sup allergies). Not only did I sneeze, I also tinked a tiny bit in my pants…like the instant I sneezed I peed. OMG. I didn’t know this happened. I instantly started laughing then had to pee more. Talk about a surprise!

So that’s been my week. Hope you’ve had a fun/exciting last few days before the long holiday weekend.

I’m probs going to get Chipotle so toodles!
